CiTiZEN KiNO #84: Asymmetric Media and the Simulacrumbs (for the 20th Anniversary of Indymedia)
“Don't hate the media, become the media” was Indymedia’s clever and logical slogan of resistance, at the time when the platform enabled new forms of networked communications, activism, and expressions of global solidarity. Two decades after the anti-globalization movement boldly stuck their fingers (or bodies) into the gears of odious machines and the corporate media apparatus—in a true Mario Savio tactical act—it’s timed to assess what went wrong. Today the net has become a treacherous terrain of surveillance capitalism (Zuboff), disinformation, disembodied confusion, gamification, and distraction. As we all scramble against a rising tide of technodystopia, we still ask: is another network possible today? This question will be put to our cinematic roundtable—what will come out?
